Plastic Facts
Australians use 3.4 million tonnes of plastics a year, and its increasing every year. - 32% went into packaging and 68% into non-packaging applications - Based on current trends, from 2020–21 to 2049–50, annual plastics consumption in Australia is projected to increase by 156% to 9.7 million tonnes.

86% of plastic goes to landfill. Only 12.6% of plastic is recycled and the rate has not improved in 20 years. - Only 8% of non packaging plastic is recycled.  - Other categories are much better e.g. Metals 87%, Paper and cardboard 62%, Glass 59%
One million tonnes of Australia’s annual plastic consumption is single-use plastic
Australia uses around 70 billion pieces of soft “scrunchable” plastics including food wrappers each year.(Even with the Container Deposit Scheme "CDS" only 22% of packaging plastic is recycled)

82% of Litter in NSW is still plasticEvery year in Australia approximately 130,000 tonnes of plastic leaks into the marine environment.

CDS recycling rate is 65% in Australia - Recycling rates are higher when there are more redemption points e.g Germany/Norway - Recycling rates are higher when there are higher refunds e.g Germany 0.40c = 99% - Recycling rates are higher when there is a culture of recycling all waste e.g. Germany
Overall recycling rates appear to be more influenced by awareness and convenience than a 10c refund.SA recycling rate is 77% compared to 63% in NSW - SA have been more proactive for much longer.
